The year 1973 was a time when the deck was stacked against high performance cars. Insurance rates were high so auto makers were not keen on producing muscle cars; purchase price and the cost of ownership were also high so the cars became hard to sell. Moreover, the EPA was constrained to cut down on vehicle emissions and fuel-thirsty muscle car engines certainly did not fit the program. So how in the world did the highest-performing Trans Am to date managed to hit the roads in such unfavorable conditions? Well, the automotive world owes a debt of gratitude to the perseverance and ingenuity of Pontiac engineers. They were able to work some loopholes with their SD version of the 455 Trans Am which Car and Driver magazine later called the fastest Pontiac car ever.
