The first half of the 20th century saw some of the most dangerous and breathtaking car races in the history of motorsport. Some consider that time the glory days. They are probably right, but that era also had a very dark side that consisted mainly of horrific deaths. Pilots, or drivers, as the Italians called them, died by the handful and spectators who had a habit of standing too close to a course often became victims as race went spiraling out of control. Humans and cars became entangled into one gory mess. But open-road endurance racing and endurance racing was absolutely thrilling.
