Helicopter pilot was installing the seven-storey-high Christmas tree in Auckland, New Zealand when the rotor clipped the hanging cable and went into a violent spin before plummeting into the ground.
After raising the 80 foot tower, the helicopter hovered at about 20 feet so the lifting line could be detached from its hook by the rigging supervisor on the ground. Preliminary report on the accident states that when the rigging supervisor jumped up to grab the line, it instantly tightened and touched the main rotor blades, causing this brutal helicopter crash.
